Penzance Harbour Options
The project is linked to the development of passenger and freight facilities at Penzance Harbour and forms part of the delivery of the Isles of Scilly Sea Link project – a major scheme bid submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT) in 2004, relating to “quay infrastructure improvements at both Penzance and St Mary’s and the commissioning of a combined passenger and freight vessel”.
The major scheme bid received conditional support from the DfT for £23,840,000 in May 2007 subject to project development (design, feasibility, and consultation), confirmation of funding and planning consents. The business case states... “that a decision on the DfT full bid must be made by January 2010 if the project is to be included as part of the agreed programme of priorities”.
This phase of the wider Sea Link project concerns the need to progress, simultaneously, two options for the infrastructure improvements at Penzance Harbour leading to the preparation of final planning applications for both options. The two options (A & C) have emerged from the consideration of options prepared as part of the major scheme bid to DfT, and whilst option A is recognised as the preferred option the applicant is seeking to have two viable options should planning consents for option A not be granted.
- Option A relates to the redevelopment of the existing south and lighthouse pier including reclamation of land.
- Option C proposes to establish an out of town freight facility at Long Rock with Trinity House acting as the passenger terminus.
