Architects’ assistant turns hand to brewing.
10.10.11
Former architects’ assistant Vaughan Haynes has turned his passion into a successful business and launched a micro brewery with the support of ERDF Convergence funded Outset Cornwall.
Outset Cornwall supports under-represented groups to start their own businesses. The definition of under represented includes women; under 25s; over 50s; long-term unemployed; disabled or ill health; anyone recently made redundant; black, minority or ethnic groups (BME) and single parents.
Vaughan Haynes had not only been made redundant from his architects’ assistant post but also suffered a serious motor accident which meant getting back to work quickly became a real challenge. Whilst recovering from his accident, Vaughan was inspired to restart a former hobby of his - brewing real ale.
He contacted the Outset Cornwall team for advice on turning this passion into a successful business venture and soon launched St Agnes-based Hogswood Brewing Co - http://www.hogswood.com . Vaughan’s friendly and personal business now produces a range of six regular cask ales: Stoked, Broken Piston, Goshen Ale, Black Boar Cornish Stout and North Shore IPA which are sold in pubs from Newlyn to Sussex.
Vaughan continually works to introduce new recipes for his seasonal and special ales that include “Yo Crimbo”, a Christmas ale and the latest two that are about to be launched, Harvest Moon, an ale made from green hops and “Ambiguous” a dark IPA. For the next phase of business development Vaughan is about to launch a limited range of bottled ales - the same flavours, but in the convenience of a bottle. He has also supported Shelter Box at local charity events.
Vaughan said, “I found the course informative, very friendly and welcoming and in an informal environment. The programme content was delivered confidently and in a way that was easily understood and staff were easily accessible for individual consultation when necessary.”
Kate McEwen, Outset Cornwall Programme Director, said, “Vaughan has been an inspiration to many more Outset Cornwall clients who have come through the programme. Having been through the trauma of redundancy and then a serious accident, he has proved that with the right support and attitude, great things can be achieved and aspirations realized. It is a credit to Vaughan and all his hard work and dedication that Hogswood is now going from strength to strength.”
Carleen Kelemen, Director of the Convergence Partnership Office for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, said, “This ERDF Convergence support via Outset Cornwall has meant that Vaughan has not only set up his own, expanding business but is enjoying producing and selling a quality Cornish product.”
As well as developing his passion into a successful career, Vaughan also hopes to grow the business to start employing local people in the near future.
Vaughan sells a selection of cask ales and stout at food and drink festivals, beer festivals and numerous regular Free Trade pubs across the county and, as a SIBA member through their direct delivery scheme that supports small local breweries. Hogswood ale can be found from The Tolcarne Inn, at Newlyn, to The Shore Inn, Sussex. It also appears regularly at the Miners Arms, Mithian; Driftwood Spars, St Agnes; the Masons Arms and the Blisland Inn, Bodmin and the Front and the Oddfellows, in Falmouth. New outlets are continually being found as the business grows.
He added, “Hogswood is completely different to anything I have done before and combines both my creative and practical skills. I plan to continue developing new and exciting beers for sale throughout Cornwall and the UK. The Outset course was a memorable experience that I am pleased to have been a part of and would certainly recommend to others thinking of starting up in business.”
