Dyson boss to address Cornwall’s engineering businesses
26.08.09
James Dyson’s right hand man will be addressing Cornwall’s engineering sector at the launch event of business collaboration project Partner to Succeed.
Sir Richard Needham has been announced as keynote speaker for the morning session of the launch at Eden on Friday, September 25th, aimed at engineering, aerospace, marine, environmental technology and agri-food businesses.
He joins fellow speaker James Alexander who will present to professional services and creative businesses during the afternoon.
With confirmation of Sir Richard’s appearance, companies now have until Tuesday, September 8th to register their interest in attending the event by emailing register@partnertosucceed.co.uk.
Partner to Succeed is the new business collaboration project, delivered by business support company YTKO and funded by ERDF Convergence and the South West Regional Development Agency.
Helen Trudgeon, programme director for Partner to Succeed, said: “To have Sir Richard Needham on board as keynote speaker for our launch is a huge coup.
“Dyson is a household name and Sir Richard has helped the company grow from a small UK player into the world’s largest vacuum cleaner manufacturer.
“We may even have the next Dyson here in Cornwall, so we’re keen to speak to engineering companies to see how we can help them develop via business collaborations.”
A former Government minister, Sir Richard Needham started his first business, a packaging design company, at the age of 23 with three friends.
He will speak about some of the challenges facing Dyson, such as how to contain bureaucracy, how to introduce modern business systems, continuing to make innovative products for an ever more competitive global market and how to keep alive the Dyson spirit of creative design.
The launch event for Partner to Succeed on September 25th is split into two sessions, aimed at manufacturing in the morning and creative /professional services in the afternoon. A lunch will take place between the sessions for delegates to network and share information.
To register your interest in attending, please email register@partnertosucceed.co.uk.

Editor's notes:
The Cornwall Business Collaboration Network project is part of Convergence, a multi-million pound European support programme designed to increase employment, skills and economic performance. Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly qualified for Convergence in 2005 because economic performance between 2000 and 2002 was below 75% of the European Union average.
