Here come the Girls! £400,000 of Convergence ESF funds for the female workforce of Cornwall to access a unique development programme

28.09.09

Truro and Penwith College Business Centre are excited to announce the launch of the new Empowering Smart Women Programme. This project will create a unique opportunity for women in Cornwall to enhance their business ambitions, management careers and entrepreneurial skills. The Business Centre with patron Carleen Kelemen, is hosting a lunch time event on Tuesday 6th October to introduce the programme.

The project will lead the way potentially for 200 highly motivated women in Cornwall offering a tailor-made programme of higher level qualifications. It will also provide networking opportunities, peer support and an inspiring professional mentoring programme. Women can access training in leadership, management skills, personal development and a programme to develop business ideas. The project is funded through the ESF (European Social Fund) Convergence Programme. It enables the female workforce of all ages and backgrounds to progress into higher level employment or self employment. It builds on the highly successful Empower programme run by the college service in 2005 and the Cornwall College SMART women project in 2007, where many participants successfully furthered their careers and as importantly made new and long lasting connections.

The project launch will be at Truro College, 12noon- 2pm, where guests will be given an insight into the project, and how it will empower women to reach their potential and breakthrough the glass ceiling. Patron Carleen Kelemen adds:
“A successful economy depends on the talents and skills of all people, no matter which gender, race, able or with disability, and of all ages. Diversity is the rich soup from which innovation and inspiration is born. The Convergence Programmes recognize that there are gaps in fully realizing women's business potential and contribution to the Cornish economy. Through this project we hope to build on the successes of Empower and Smart Women to accelerate the progress of ambitious women onto the world of self employment or senior promotion."

The event will feature inspirational guest speakers Eleanor McGillie, Deputy Editor of the Western Morning News and Rachel Jones, founder of the award winning and highly successful Fit n Fun Kidz, a previous participant of the Empower Women’s Project. Speakers will inform participants of their successes and their entrepreneurial experiences that have led them to their position today.
